Breathing Guidelines

Inhale through the lowering phase and exhale during the upward phase of the exercise. If heavier loads are used, the athlete may choose to inhale and hold through the lowering phase and exhale on the upward phase of the lateral squat.

Coaching Tips

Make sure that as the athlete lowers into the lateral squat position, the torso remains centered with the hips and does not laterally flex at the end of the downward movement phase.

Observe the lateral weight distribution on the foot at the bottom of the lateral squat. The weight should not shift excessively to the outside of the foot; it should remain balanced between the medial and lateral aspects of the foot.
